The NIS2 Directive (click here for the directive) is the EU-wide legislation on cybersecurity which came into effect in 2023. It modernizes the cybersecurity regulations from 2016, to keep up with increased digitization and an evolving cybersecurity threat landscape. The directive stipulates legal measures to boost the overall level of cybersecurity in the EU by improving preparedness measures, cooperation among EU member states and a culture of security across critical sectors.
What is NIS2?
When will the NIS 2 Directive come into force?
- The NIS2 Directive (EU) 2022/2555 came into force EU-wide in 2023.
- It is not a directly applicable directive, but must first be transposed into national law.
- The deadline to transpose it into national law is 18. October 2024.
- NIS2 sets a minimum standard, EU member states can also adopt stricter regulations.
- Germany already has a draft bill for the NIS2 implementation.
